NHC hosts free public talk series at Te Papa this winter

The Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake is hosting a free public talk series in partnership with Te Papa this winter to showcase fascinating natural hazards research happening in Wellington.

Over three Tuesday evenings in July and August, the ‘Active Land Talk Series Kōrero whakarūamoko’ will explore how science is helping prepare the country for future natural hazards events.

Top down view of New Zealand with the words Active Land talk series laid over the topNHC’s Chief Resilience Officer, Jo Horrocks says, “We have a fantastic line-up of speakers who will cover topics ranging from why we don’t prepare for hazards when we know we should, to how embracing mātauranga Māori can lead to better emergency preparedness.”

This talk series is part of the NHC Toka Tū Ake long-standing partnership with Te Papa to support public engagement in natural phenomena. NHC Toka Tū Ake also invests in research, some of which will be featured in this series.

“We want New Zealanders to better understand their risks and how to prepare for them. We hope people will enjoy hearing about some of the amazing science that goes into planning for natural hazards and will be inspired to apply this knowledge to their own emergency planning.”

The three-talk series will take place in Te Papa’s Rongomaraeroa marae over July and August. Entry is free but bookings are recommended through the Te Papa website.
