Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake invests approximately $10M per year in research and initiatives that help reduce the impacts from natural hazards on people, property, and the community. Our five-year Research Strategy sets out how our investment will support our research goal through advancing research and capability development that will benefit New Zealand.
Our research portfolio delivers on our goal through:
- the competitive grants programmes (Biennials and University Research Programmes),
- strategic programmes (e.g. that are focused on delivering to our Risk Reduction priorities, loss modelling and national databases such as the National Seismic Hazard Model),
- capability development (e.g. Te Toi Whakaruruhau, guidelines for geo-technical and engineering professionals, postgraduate grants, event/conference sponsorships),
- national/regional programmes (e.g. GeoNet, DEVORA, It’s Our Fault). (All linked to internal media pages that describe the NHC Toka Tū Ake investment in each)
The Research Investment Priorities Statement outlines the opportunities and gaps we see in the New Zealand natural hazard risk research landscape and describes areas of new research investment that will advance our goals. This statement should help applicants align their proposals with our strategic areas of interest.
